The rise in smart phones has led to a huge increase in the amount of mobile gaming applications.  In fact, more games are being played on mobile devices than on consoles.  The iPad has led to a 50% increase in online gamers over the last two years.  That shouldn’t really be a surprise as the price of consoles and games is massive compared to the
free apps that you can download for a device that many people carry around with them everywhere.  The graphics in the latest smart phones are even starting to match their console counterparts such as the Xbox 360.  In another year, smart phone graphics will have surpassed the current generation consoles until the Xbox One and PS4 are released.  For many people, a combination of smart phones and PC gaming more than satisfies their gaming sweet tooth.

There is a huge variety of games you can get for smart phones and tablets.  Many of them are free, and even the pay ones range from $.99 to only a couple of dollars.  When you’re in the mood for some more serious gaming, there’s always the PC; so what really is the point of
console gaming these days?

Even games commonly associated with the computer are starting to become available for mobile devices.  Casinos have developed intricate applications that combine social media with card playing.  Some applications allow you to see the face of your opponent, talk with them, and even form poker nights with your buddies.  Bringing the power of social websites to applications is definitely the next big step in gaming apps.  Click here to take a look at what some of the biggest names in the casino industry are doing with mobile applications.

With smart phones getting more and more powerful every day, what is the future in mobile gaming?  Many people think mobile devices will eventually grow to replace consoles in the future.  Simply plugging in the device to a TV and controllers with a Blutooth device would be much more convenient than a dedicated console.  You could take your gaming system to a friends and play there without dragging a whole bunch of equipment as well.  Games could be digitally downloaded right to your device and save manufactures packaging costs as well.

Whatever the future of online gaming is, smart phones are here to stay.  Unless consoles start innovating, I predict smart phones will continue to grab the market and possibly eventually replace them altogether.  With almost everybody owning a smart phone these days, that might not happen too far into the future after all.
